Stainless Steel Welding Changing The World For The Better

Stainless Welding is a fabrication or sculptural process that joins materials, usually metals or thermoplastics, by using high heat to melt the parts together and allowing them to cool causing fusion. In the fabrication of SS products, components, or equipment, manufacturers employ welding as the principal joining method. Stainless steels are weldable materials, and a welded joint can provide optimum corrosion resistance, strength, and fabrication economy. The standard in this industry is usually the American Welding Society (AWS). However, designers should recognize that any metal, including stainless steels, may undergo certain changes during welding. It is necessary, therefore, to exercise a reasonable degree of care during welding to minimize or prevent any deleterious effects that may occur, and to preserve the same degree of corrosion resistance and strength in the weld zone that is an inherent part of the base metal.

What is Stainless Steel?

Stainless steel is a type of high alloy steel with FeCr, FeCrC and FeCrNi as alloy systems. As a type of stainless steel, chromium must be contained in a mass fraction of not less than 10.5%. The steel containing this minimum chromium content can form an inert oxide layer on its surface. This inert oxide layer can protect the inner metal from being oxidized and corroded in the air without corrosive medium. Stainless steel not only has obvious corrosion resistance, but also has excellent strength and plastic toughness. It has good performance at high and low temperatures.

How to MIG Welding Stainless Steel

In most cases, MIG welding stainless steel wire and sheet metal forms is pretty simple for Our manufacturing wire. We provide various MIG welding wire to perform the welding.

However, even this simple process has its complications. Some things that need to be considered include:

  • Bracing the Joint During Welding.
  • Distributing Heat from the Weld.
  • Choosing an Inert Gas Blend.
  • Cleaning the Weld Joint.

Can You TIG Welding Stainless Steel

For TIG welding stainless steel, you can use a DC-only machine or AC/DC TIG welding machines in DC-mode. Importantly, make sure your machine has sufficient power to weld stainless steel.

  • Yet again, cleanliness is everything when you TIG weld stainless steel.
  • Get your TIG torch set-up for stainless.
  • Don’t overlook all-important torch consumables either.
  • As ever, make sure to choose the correct rod for the grade of stainless steel that you’ll be welding (widely-used grades include 316, 308 and 312 stainless).
  • Just as for TIG welding aluminium, control is everything.
  • Consider pulse welding thinner stainless steel.
